Austrian by birth and New Yorker by choice
Karin Bratone

I am originally from VIENNA, Austria and now have lived in and around New York City for close to 30 years. Even after so many years, I am still fascinated with the city I now call home: where I married a native New Yorker, and where we have raised our two children (now both off to college). There really is no other place I would rather live!

I arrived in New York on October 12th, 1980 as a tourist, intending to spend only a few weeks in a city I had read about many times and only seen in the movies. I had just graduated from the University of Vienna as a professional translator and interpreter and was working as a journalist for the Austrian Press Agency (APA) in Vienna. On this first visit to New York I felt instantly at home and welcome in this city of eight million people. I no longer remember whether I first fell in love with New York and then with my husband – or vice versa. In any case, I decided to stay.

For many years I worked as a free-lance New York contributor to Austrian and German magazines. In 1985 I co-authored allof the New York stories and insider tips to one of the first GEO SPEZIAL issues on NEW YORK CITY.

I became a licensed New York City tour guide in 1985 and have been showing around visitors from Germany, Austria and other European countries every since.

I am also a free-lance interpreter and New York business consultant.

For the past ten years my husband and I have been operating an online antiquarian book business, Pellbooks.Inc www.pellbooks.com
